SmithGroup Promotes 20 to Principal

SmithGroup, one of the nation’s largest architecture, engineering and planning firms, has promoted 20 to principal.

Tricia A. Beck, AIA, LEED AP

A senior project manager in the SmithGroup Detroit office, Tricia Beck specializes in cultivating strategy, while applying sustainable, human-centered design in both the Learning and Healthcare studios. With nearly 20 years of experience, Beck excels at leveraging strong internal and external relationships and managing daily project activities. Among Beck’s most significant projects are the University of Michigan-Flint, Murchie Science Building renovations; the 500,000-square-foot Emory University Hospital Expansion, Atlanta, Georgia; and the new 67,000-square-foot Valley Dining Center at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, slated to break ground late spring 2015. Beck received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from Lawrence Technological University. She lives in Waterford, MI.

Fletcher J. Clarcq, PE, CEM, LEED AP BD+C

With more than 17 years of experience, Fletcher Clarcq is an accomplished mechanical engineer at the Phoenix office. With expertise in the fields of healthcare, higher education, recreation centers and laboratories, specifically air-conditioning applications and sustainable design strategies, Clarcq is recognized for providing clients with energy-efficient, cost-saving solutions. While helping to lead engineering for the Phoenix office Healthcare and Science & Technology Studios, Clarcq is also serving as senior mechanical engineer on several noteworthy SmithGroup projects, including the 400,000-square-foot, Banner Estrella Medical Center expansion in Phoenix; and the new Northbay Healthcare Medical Office Building & Wellness Center in Vacaville, California. He is a Certified Energy Manager and a LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. Clarcq earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from State University of New York at Binghamton. He currently resides in Phoenix.

Brenna Costello, AIA, EDAC

Brenna Costello, a healthcare planner at the Washington, DC office, has earned national recognition for the planning and design of advanced rehabilitation, polytrauma and traumatic brain injury facilities. Her portfolio includes several world-class medical facilities, including the 223,000-square-foot Craig Hospital Renovation and Expansion, Englewood, Colorado, as well as the 72,000-square-foot National Intrepid Center for Excellence (NICoE), Bethesda, Maryland, where she served as architect and medical planner. Costello is also actively involved in the development of a network of nine satellite, traumatic brain injury and research centers that are based on the NICoE model. Costello earned her Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from Clemson University’s Architecture + Health Program. She currently lives in Washington, DC.

Matt Davis, RA

Matt Davis, an architect at the San Francisco office, leverages expertise in multifaceted, large-scale urban buildings. With his thorough technical knowledge of building systems, document production and quality control, he participates in a wide range of integrated design projects. Davis is currently involved in the new $1.06 billion, 274-bed Sutter Health California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Van Ness and Geary campus, San Francisco. Davis received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree from California State Polytechnic University, and is a current resident of Oakland, California.

Gabriel Fonseca, RA, LEED AP

A project manager at the San Francisco office, Fonseca specializes in providing socially responsible designs and construction expertise for multi-unit residential and urban housing projects, specifically senior and assisted living communities. Significant projects for Fonseca include Peninsula Health Care District’s 124-unit Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility, Burlingame, California, and Santa Teresita’s 360,000-square-foot Good Shepherd Cottage in Duarte, California, which is the first of six assisted living houses built on the 12-acre site. Fonseca also served as a project architect for the 8,000-square-foot re-design of the Neurology Patient Care Unit at Stanford University. Fonseca earned a BA in Architecture from University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s of Architecture from Yale University. He resides in San Francisco.

Kent Hetherwick, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

Kent Hetherwick, project manager at the San Francisco office, has over 20 years of experience specializing in the design and management of multifaceted healthcare projects. Hetherwick is currently serving as project manager on two significant, complex healthcare projects: Sutter Health’s 12-story, 730,000-square-foot California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Van Ness and Geary campus, now under construction; and the 97,000-square-foot, Emory Healthcare Clinic A Renovation, Atlanta. Hetherwick earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Toledo, Ohio. He resides in Orinda, California.

Kevin Johnson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

An architect and project manager at the Washington, DC office, Kevin Johnson is actively involved in a wide variety of project types. He’s experienced in all phases of architectural production and consistently delivers well-documented, coordinated design solutions. Johnson’s market sector expertise features higher-education facilities such as University of Pennsylvania’s new 78,000-square-foot Neural-Behavioral Sciences Building, and the new 156,000-sqaure-foot S.J. Quinney College of Law at University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Johnson attended Ball State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture. He resides in Washington, DC.

Scott Kreitlein, AIA, LEED AP

Scott Kreitlein joined SmithGroup in 2014 as leader of the Science & Technology Studio at its Phoenix office. A 20-year architecture veteran, Kreitlein is recognized for his expertise in the design and planning of biocontainment and animal holding facilities. Notable projects include those at the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington, Louisiana; the BSRB2 Zayed Building for Personalized Cancer Care for the University of Texas – MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; and the Taiwan Center for Disease Control near Taipei, Taiwan R.O.C. Kreitlein earned a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Utah following a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design from Brigham Young University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is a LEED Accredited Professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. Kreitlein is a resident of Mesa, Arizona.

Michael Paul Krug, AIA, LEED AP

Michael Paul Krug, a project architect in the SmithGroup Detroit office, has served as a key team member on a wide-range of multifaceted projects within the firm’s Health, Learning and Science & Technology studios. Some of the most noteworthy projects for Krug include the 229,800-square-foot Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University, now under construction in East Lansing; and the 72,500-square-foot Events Center at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, completed in 2011. Krug graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture followed by a Master of Architecture.  He is a resident of Chelsea, MI.

Jamie Lee, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

As a project designer at the Washington, DC office, Jamie Lee successfully leads projects through the design and documentation process, while organizing complex coordination efforts. She is able to transform multifaceted processes into easily communicable solutions between all project teams. Currently, Lee is serving on the SmithGroup team for the American University Washington College of Law, slated for completion in 2016, and was instrumental on the 170,000-square-foot Villanova University School of Law project, completed in 2009. Lee earned a BA in Design and Environment from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Lee is a resident of Washington, DC.

Stephen Lodge, AIA

Stephen Lodge is the Detroit office’s director of architecture. Hired in 2012, Lodge has over 20 years of experience, specializing in complex spaces such as gymnasiums, natatoriums, music rooms and specialty classrooms, and delivers consistent results to municipal and education clients alike. He is currently serving as project architect for Sparrow Health System Hospital’s cafeteria relocation and retail improvements, Lansing, Michigan; and the 125,000-square-foot, Charlevoix Area Hospital Master Plan, Charlevoix, Michigan. Lodge holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Master of Architecture, both from Lawrence Technological University. He resides in Washington Township, MI.

Laura Matter, CPSM, LEED AP

Laura Matter, as SmithGroup’s Learning Practice manager based at the Detroit office, is responsible for overseeing strategic and tactical activities to ensure market leadership and growth of the Learning Practice. With more than 15 years of experience in the A/E industry, her efforts in marketing, research, communications and client development have further advanced the SmithGroup Learning Practice team as thought leaders and innovators. Additionally, she has been a key support in growing the firm’s presence in Shanghai, China by helping to define a marketing strategy, as well as business development goals and initiatives. Matter is active in the Society for Marketing Professional Services and is past president of the Michigan chapter. Matter earned a Bachelor and Master of Architecture from University of Detroit-Mercy, Detroit, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Michigan-Dearborn. She is a resident of Royal Oak, MI.

Emily McKinnon, PE, LEED AP BD+C

Emily McKinnon joined the SmithGroup Ann Arbor office as a civil engineer in 2007. She has over 15 years of design and engineering experience in municipal, institutional and commercial projects. Specializing in managing complex, multifaceted design teams, McKinnon’s business development and communication skills have aided in producing long-lasting and successful client relationships. One of McKinnon’s latest, most noteworthy projects is the new Traverse City Public Pier in downtown Traverse City, Michigan, for which she is serving as civil engineer and project manager. McKinnon earned a Bachelor of Civil & Environmental Engineering degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She resides in Ann Arbor.

Mark Potter, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

As a senior project manager at the Detroit office, Mark Potter’s primary focus is large-scale, science & technology and higher education buildings. He successfully manages diverse and multifaceted project teams, and consistently leverages firm-wide initiatives to improve performance throughout all project phases. Among Potter’s notable projects are the new $261 million, 300,000-square-foot Biological Science Building at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and University of Pennsylvania’s new $68.6 million, 78,000-square-foot, Neural-Behavioral Sciences Building, Philadelphia. Potter received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, followed by a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Potter is a resident of Ann Arbor.

Michelle Romero, IIDA, NCIDQ

As an interior designer in the Phoenix office, Michelle Romero leverages over 14 years of experience. She exceeds expectations by focusing on client visioning and producing practical and innovative strategies. Romero is currently providing services on several projects out of the firm’s Workplace Practice, including the 42,000-square-foot interior renovation at Microsoft Technology Center, Houston; and the new General Motors IT Innovation Center Austin-McCallen Pass in Austin, Texas. Romero is past president of the International Interior Design Association’s Southwest Chapter, and earned her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona. She currently resides in Phoenix.

Dayton Schroeter, AIA

Dayton Schroeter is an architectural designer at the Washington, DC office. He leverages experience throughout all design phases, specifically in the areas of parametric design, sustainable design, and 3D visualization. He has played significant roles on several complex projects, including the 78,000-square-foot Neural-Behavioral Sciences Building, now under construction at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the Zucker Graduate Education Center at Clemson University Research Institute, Clemson, South Carolina, scheduled to open by fall semester 2016. Dayton graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Architecture. He is a resident of Washington, DC.

Vladislav (Vlad) Torskiy, AIA, ACHE, AHA

With nearly 30 years of experience, Vlad Torskiy is a recognized authority in facilities, strategic and operational planning; Lean healthcare implementation; and diagnostic and treatment services. Torskiy, who joined the firm in 2014, brought industry-leading expertise to the Washington, DC office’s Health Studio as well as the firm’s growing international health practice. Torskiy’s portfolio includes major academic medical centers, community hospitals, as well as U.S. Department of Defense medical and science and technology facilities. Among the projects at SmithGroup with which Torskiy is active include several for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Torskiy received a MS in Architecture from the Ukrainian Academy of Fine Arts, Kiev, a Master of Healthcare Administration from Ohio University, and is a recipient of a Lean Healthcare Certificate from Belmont University’s Massey Graduate School of Business, Nashville, Tennessee.

John Tran, AIA, LEED AP

Hired in 2014 as design principal at the Phoenix office, John Tran is not only a member of the leadership team for the firm’s practice in Arizona and southwest U.S., but also provides support to all SmithGroup offices. An award-winning designer with 20+ years of experience, Tran’s portfolio offers experience in the U.S. and internationally, with work in China, Japan and Mexico. He’s currently serving as design principal for the Arizona Cardinals Football Club Training Facility renovation in Tempe, Arizona, as well as the renovation of Hayden Flour Mill, Tempe. Tran received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and a LEED accredited professional by the U.S. Green Building Council. Tran is a resident of Phoenix.

Lauren Williams, RLA, LEED AP BD+C

Lauren Williams is a landscape architect and urban designer, whose primary focus is campus planning. A member of the SmithGroup Ann Arbor office since 2011, Williams has provided her expertise on several long-term growth and development strategies for a range of academic, commercial and healthcare projects. Williams is serving as campus planner and project coordinator on the multi-campus, El Paso Community College Master Plan, El Paso, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Master of Urban Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Williams is a resident of Saline.

David Winfrey, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

David Winfrey, who serves as SmithGroup’s Dallas office Health and Science & Technology Studio leader, has over 15 years of architecture experience, specializing in project design and client management. He is responsible for the guiding, planning and design of general and specialty hospitals, cancer centers, ambulatory surgery centers, medical office buildings, as well as research and teaching laboratories. Most notably, Winfrey is currently serving as project manager for Texas Tech University’s Plant + Soil Science Building addition and renovation, a $10 million project slated for completion in April 2015; the new $16.7 million University of Texas at Tyler College of Pharmacy building, targeting completion in June 2015; and the $17.1 million University of Texas at Dallas Callier Richardson expansion, a 77,300-square-foot addition to the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Winfrey graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Architecture degree from the University of Florida. He is a registered architect in Texas, a member of NCARB and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Winfrey is a resident of Dallas.
