SmithGroup Promotes John Crump to Workplace Studio Leader at Washington, DC Office
SmithGroup has promoted John Crump, AIA, LEED AP, to leader of the Workplace Studio at its Washington, DC office.
In his new role, Crump directs the planning and design services of the Washington, DC office’s Workplace Studio, mentors staff and provides his project management and design expertise. He is also advancing the firm’s growing hospitality portfolio in the Mid-Atlantic region. Crump succeeds David Varner, who was promoted to lead SmithGroup’s national Workplace Practice.
Crump specializes in corporate commercial and hospitality projects and is recognized for finding unique solutions to the constraints of Washington, DC’s most complex, urban sites. One such project, the National Academy of Sciences building in DC’s Gallery Place neighborhood, integrated a full block and addressed the Academies’ culture of encouraging collaboration by creating an interconnecting stair and multi-functional atrium.
Crump’s portfolio also includes numerous success stories of historic preservation, during which new development was united with the storied history of DC’s most treasured structures. Projects include 901 K Street, NW, a premier, trophy office and mixed-use development that simultaneously restored the Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, originally built in 1850 and now a DC landmark. Additionally, the recently completed 1700 New York Avenue, NW office building, which houses SmithGroup’s Washington, DC office, is actually an addition to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, another national landmark. For both projects, Crump ensured the integrity of the historic structures was preserved and celebrated alongside the new development.
Crump attributes his success to a passion for staying focused on exceptional service. “The architects who founded this office contributed a legacy of outstanding relationships with the local commercial real estate community, and I intend to continue and nurture that practice,” he said.
Crump is a member of the Washington, DC chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He joined SmithGroup in 1997 as an intern architect, later advancing to the roles of project architect, associate and principal. He is a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture in 1992 and a Master of Architecture in 1993.
Crump is a native of Portland, Maine and currently resides in Washington, DC.
