SmithGroup Elects four to Board of Directors
SmithGroup, one of the leading architecture, engineering and planning firms in the U.S., has elected Hank Byma, Mary Jukuri, Roxanne Malek and Don Posson to join its Board of Directors.
Hank Byma
New Board member Hank Byma, ASLA, serves as SmithGroup’s director of China operations. Among the firm’s projects in China led by Byma is a new, 2,400-acre central business district development located in Kunming, a modern capital city of five million located in the southern Yunnan province. Byma has 30 years of experience in urban redevelopment, landscape architecture, land planning and design of resorts, large-scale residential and mixed-use developments, and recreational facilities. His philosophy emphasizes the importance of relationships between creative concepts, their context, and maintaining environmental sensitivity and long-term sustainability. Byma earned a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Massachusetts, preceded by dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture from Michigan State University. He is a resident of Dexter, MI.
Mary Jukuri
New Board Member Mary Jukuri, RLA, ASLA, is senior campus planner and landscape architect. Based at SmithGroup’s Ann Arbor, Michigan office, Jukuri is among the firm’s top experts in campus planning and urban design. She is currently serving as the firm’s principal-in- charge for the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign master plan update. She is also lead planner for a campus master plan update for the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which will provide direction on future building sites, preserve and enhance open space, address campus transportation and the necessary infrastructure to support future development of the campus. In recent years, Jukuri was SmithGroup’s lead designer and landscape architect for the award-winning Detroit RiverWalk and lead planner for the firm’s work for the Arizona State University master plan update. A frequent speaker at national and international conferences, she is a graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture. Jukuri lives in Scio Township, MI.
Roxanne Malek
New Board Member Roxanne Malek, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, leads the firm’s San Francisco studio dedicated to higher education. She has high expertise in a range of project types – from large scale academic projects to complex science and technology facilities. During her 19 years with SmithGroup, Malek has been recognized for her project management and design skills while remaining at the forefront of some of the office’s most notable projects at academic campuses throughout California, including Stanford University, University of California San Francisco, University of California Davis, and University of California Berkeley. Among her most recent projects are the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Integrative Genomics Building, soon to start construction; and the University of California, Merced’s Science & Engineering Building II, which was awarded LEED Platinum certification in 2015. Malek is a graduate of Cornell University where she received a Bachelor of Architecture. She is a native of and now lives in San Francisco.
Don Posson
New Board Member Don Posson, PE, CCP, CPD, LEED AP BD+C, serves as director of engineering at SmithGroup and is based at the firm’s Washington, DC office. Among his most significant projects underway is the new Museum of the Bible, now under construction in Washington, DC and slated for completion in late 2017. For the $400 million, 430,000-square-foot project, Posson is serving as SmithGroup’s engineering principal and lead mechanical engineer. He is serving in the same capacity for a new headquarters building for DC Water, to be constructed along the waterfront of the Anacostia River in growing southeast Washington, DC. When completed in 2018, the six-story, Class A building will target LEED Platinum certification. Posson is recognized in the industry for his knowledge and leadership in sustainable design, laboratory systems design, and energy efficiency and high-performance building design. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering, Cum Laude, from Kansas State University. Posson now resides in Alexandria, VA.
