SmithGroup Promotes Lori Cappuccio to Higher Education Studio Leader at Washington, DC Office
SmithGroup, one of the nation’s largest integrated design firms, has promoted Lori Cappuccio, AIA, LEED AP, to Higher Education Studio leader at its Washington, DC office.
In her new role, Cappuccio will focus on the needs of the office’s current clients and grow market share in the robust higher education market on the east coast. She previously served as the office’s architectural discipline lead, where she acted as a local resource and helped advance project delivery methods, strengthened integrated practices, and advocated for quality design.

Since joining the firm in 1998 as an architect, Cappuccio has successfully led design and project delivery for a wide range of projects, including the American University Washington College of Law, Washington, DC; George Mason University Founders Hall, Fairfax, Virginia; Gallaudet University Sorenson Language and Communication Center in Washington, DC; Old Dominion University New Chemistry Building – Physical Science Phase I, Norfolk, Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Nursing and Instructional Building.
A mentor to young professionals and an advocate for women in the profession, Cappuccio has put her leadership skills to work outside the office. She served as a tour guide and volunteer for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Women's Leadership Summit in 2017 and was a member of the Lecture Series Committee for DC Women in Architecture in both 2014 and 2015.
Cappuccio is a graduate of University of Detroit Mercy, where she earned a Bachelor of Architecture, Magna Cum Laude. She is a registered architect and LEED accredited professional. A native of Grand Blanc, Michigan, Cappuccio currently resides in Fairfax, Virginia.
