Higher Education in the City: Balancing Mission and Urbanization
On August 9th SmithGroup and Metropolis Magazine partnered to bring a panel together to discuss higher education in the city. As development accelerates in major cities, universities are seeking innovative ways to achieve their goals, even amidst gentrification, escalating costs and diminishing social equity. Complicating matters are the many constraints of achieving the educational mission within a postage stamp-sized real estate footprint. As rapid change drives real estate decisions, universities in urban centers are exploring new ecosystems of space and partnerships. How can institutions leverage challenging property markets to address the frequently competing needs of real estate and educational mission?
