While integrated design has spurred sustainable and resilient solutions at the building and site levels, the climate change and resilience issues we’re facing as a nation/planet cannot be solved at this level. We urgently need to scale up our design thinking to address these issues. Higher education campuses and urban development districts provide an invaluable opportunity to scale up our thinking, our work and our design impact, to address energy, water, mobility, health/wellness, ecology, and emergency preparedness as integrated systems that cross multiple boundaries. What can we learn from each other on these larger-scale performance-based efforts, and how can we advance and incentivize this scaled-up performance in our planning and design work?
