Cindy Cogil Elevated to American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers College of Fellows
SmithGroup, one of the nation’s largest integrated design firms, is pleased to announce that Cindy Cogil, PE, LEED AP BD+C, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This prestigious honor comes in recognition of Cogil’s many outstanding accomplishments and service to the profession.
A valued member of the SmithGroup team for over 22 years, Cogil serves as a principal of the firm and director of engineering at its Chicago office. As a recognized author, presenter and technical adviser within the field, Cogil’s career has been defined by a passion for blending engineering expertise with exceptional leadership skills and a specialization in energy conservation strategies.
Throughout her career Cogil has led engineering teams in developing efficient, resilient solutions for some of the most complex and strategic projects in SmithGroup’s portfolio. Notable award-winning work includes American University’s Washington College of Law, Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s (CBF) Philip Merrill Environmental Center, and its Brock Environmental Center, to name a few. Cogil’s technical contributions helped the former CBF project become the world’s first Platinum LEED-certified building; her work on the latter positioned the facility to transcend LEED Platinum standards and achieve certification under the International Living Future Institute’s rigorous Living Building Challenge.
A long-standing and active member within ASHRAE, Cogil has applied her leadership skills to serve the organization at the state and national levels. Contributions have included multi-year service on the group’s professional development committee, as well as holding various committee chair, board and officer positions for the group’s National Capital Chapter.
Cogil graduated from Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering. She also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from University of Kansas. She is a licensed professional engineer and holds certification as a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C) from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Cogil and the entire class of Fellows were honored at a ceremony held on February 10, 2021 during the organization’s virtual winter conference.
