Rising Star

Kaiwen Yang

Rural healthcare faces inequality, poor accessibility, and shortages in primary and mental health care. Telehealth technology has enabled the “capsule clinic” model, small community primary care facilities in Chinese villages. SmithGroup Architectural Designer Kaiwen Yang will explore how the Chinese capsule clinic model can be adapted to rural healthcare in the U.S., expanding access and offering innovation opportunities. Through case studies and comparative analysis, the proposed American capsule clinic prototype will demonstrate a kit-of-parts approach to address rural healthcare challenges, improving equity, accessibility and quality.
