Detroit
The Motor City. Hockeytown. The D. Whatever you want to call it, Detroit, after all, is where we began more than 170 years ago, making it the longest continually operating architecture and engineering firm in the nation. Over the years, Detroit has given SmithGroup so many outstanding opportunities to shape (and re-shape!) its landscape, from Comerica Park to the Detroit RiverWalk, and well beyond.
SmithGroup can claim an unparalleled Detroit pedigree, established in the city in 1855. We’re proud of our independent firm’s long history, and proud to have stood by Detroit through all of its ups and downs over the past century. The flagship Detroit office specializes in the Health, Workplace, Higher Education, Science & Technology and Urban Design sectors. Our integrated practice offers depth in all disciplines serving the built and natural environment from architecture to engineering.
Our Detroit office is a collection of big thinkers and hard workers. SmithGroup’s Detroit office looks out to the city’s remarkable skyline from the historic Guardian Building designed by SmithGroup in the 1920s. We are a fun-loving group that gives our talent great opportunities to work on cutting-edge design as well as be involved in collaborative, integrative design work. Our culture creates an environment that encourages you to think outside the box. Our Detroit office has been recognized as a Detroit Free Press Top Workplace for 11 consecutive years.
For over 40 years our Detroit office has run an Exploring Post program that provides high school students with the opportunity to "explore" the architectural and engineering professions while participating in hands-on activities alongside professional architects and engineers within SmithGroup. Through workshop meetings at our office in the Guardian Building, the Exploring Post enhances the participants’ enthusiasm and passion in their field of interest and encourages the career awareness required for their success as they advance to college. We have a remarkable program planned for this year and invite interested students to participate. Anyone is free to join at any time within the program year.
