Hsiao-Lin Hu
"As a healthcare designer," says Hsiao-Lin, "I am cognizant of the immense impact that a well-designed and thoughtful hospital experience can have on the healing process of our patients." She believes design is beyond bridging the transition between clinical and comfortable. "I always think fun is the best medicine for kids, and similarly, a good design should enhance the intangible healing of mind and emotions. The Valley Children’s and UCSF Benioff Children’s hospitals testify to this fun-oriented, and children-focused design principle that she champions. Her custom graphics borrow from local environments to tell a story, allowing children to view “as if they were reading a book.” At home, Hsiao-Lin makes time to craft snappy school fundraising posters with her kids, and research with them about the potential benefits of AI in assisting children with communication difficulties. "I am fascinated at how art and technology has progressed and expands our understanding of one’s imagination." Hsiao Lin has won more than 10 design awards, including five National AIA Healthcare Design Awards. Her passion is integrating research-based health psychology into space design and environmental graphics.
