The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Joan and Sanford I. Weill Neurosciences Building received the renowned 2022 SEFA Lab of the Year Award, the international industry-leading award in laboratory design. One of the world's largest and most advanced neuroscience complexes, this 282,000-square-foot facility brings together clinical psychiatry and neuroscience research, driving advances for treatments of the brain and nervous system.
Working closely with UCSF faculty and clinicians to deliver their mission, the team located research areas directly above clinical floors to expedite scientific discovery. Instead of work being segregated across multiple facilities, wet benches, dry computational labs and instrumentation rooms are all under the same roof as the patient care, leading to faster scientific breakthroughs for patients.
As executive architect of record and lab and clinical planner, SmithGroup provided architectural oversight, interdisciplinary planning and technical design.
