Mark never loses his appreciation for the projects brought by SmithGroup clients. “Our buildings have a large future impact on society and the way we think about science and humanity,” he notes. “I’ve been able to work on a facility that has changed the way we think about the brain, a research lab looking at ways to unravel the universe and a healthcare center curing cancer. It’s one of the most exciting parts of architecture and I’m so lucky to be a part of these discoveries.” Mark says he’s been following that career path since he was a young child, awed by the Chicago skyline. “I never feel like I am ‘working,’” he remarks. “Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to be an architect. This is such an amazing career and it’s what I get to do in life.” When it’s time for a break, Mark often heads for a local hockey rink. He’s been an avid hockey player since he was a kid, and still finds time to skate two or three times a week.
