City Heights Performance Annex

At the heart of San Diego's City Heights neighborhood, the City Heights Performance Annex transforms a modest community theater into a welcoming, functional, and inspiring destination for local artists, performers, and residents. Designed as an addition and enhancement to an existing black box theater adjacent to the City of San Diego’s City Heights/Weingart Branch Library, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can create an outsized impact on community life.

Serving one of San Diego's most culturally diverse neighborhoods, the project strengthens an established civic and cultural hub that includes the library, public park spaces, community programs, and local schools. The design recognizes the area's rich artistic identity and longstanding community pride while creating new opportunities for gathering, performance, and celebration. By introducing a new lobby vestibule, ticket office, green room, dressing room, and back-of-house amenities, the enhanced theater can now better serve its original purpose.

Beyond the building itself, the design reimagines an underutilized courtyard as an accessible, flexible public gathering space. By simplifying grades and improving circulation, the team transformed a fragmented outdoor area into a seamless community commons that can support performances, events, and everyday social interaction. The courtyard extends the theater experience beyond its walls and strengthens connections between the surrounding civic amenities.

Playful design interventions celebrate the performing arts while reinforcing a strong sense of place. A distinctive piano-key fence casts musical shadows across the pavement, while a contemporary marquee creates a recognizable identity for the theater and signals activity to the broader community. Additional artistic features, including mosaic detailing inspired by a stage curtain and opportunities for future community murals, invite local expression and cultivate a sense of ownership among residents.

Although modest in size, the City Heights Performance Annex illustrates how strategic investments in cultural infrastructure can elevate everyday community experiences. Combining imaginative architecture, interiors, and placemaking with a deep appreciation for local identity, the project creates an inviting setting where creativity, culture, and community can thrive.
