I want to take this opportunity to thank you and the SmithGroup team for your exceptional performance on the General Services Administration (GSA) Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) 17th Street Security Modernization project. This complex, highly visible project placed extraordinary demands on the project team, requiring a cooperative multi-disciplinary approach to integrating state of the art security and utility technology systems into a historic landmark. Your ability to quickly grasp and respond to the existing conditions and the tenant needs, combined with your willingness to adopt unique engineering and architectural solutions allowed us to update and upgrade the building while preserving its historic fabric and character.

Tyrone Anderson
Project Director, GSA

As the world changes and sustainability and security become daily concerns, our buildings need to adequately address those needs. This is especially true in Washington DC, where the some of our nation’s most culturally-significant buildings house our nation’s most important government operations.

The Eisenhower Executive Office Building is home to over 1,500 employees with the Executive Offices of the President, the Office of the Vice President, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Defense. Built in 1871, the building is considered one of the finest surviving examples of the Second Empire style in America. As stunning as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building is, its functionality suffered due its antiquated building systems.

Our team was responsible for modernizing the historic building by delicately replacing the HVAC, electrical power, security data, and communications systems with minimal impact on the integrity of the original structure. In a quintessential example of our historic preservation knowledge, we helped safeguard the Eisenhower Executive Office Building by improving the quality and safety of this important office building located next door to the White House.
