The first St. Luke’s Hospital opened in 1871, with just 17 beds in a rented house in San Francisco’s Mission-Bernal Heights district. The St. Luke’s campus is now in its fifth generation, and a replacement hospital, named CPMC Mission Bernal, is the first step in renewing the campus as a modern testament to an enduring community.

Part of Sutter Health CPMC’s city-wide plans to address seismic safety regulations, the new Mission Bernal hospital replaces the aging, non-seismic compliant St. Luke’s hospital with a more efficient, state-of-the-art facility to serve the southern communities and neighborhoods of San Francisco and Northern San Mateo County.

The new, 120-bed hospital offers urgent care, surgery, acute and critical care and expanded centers for emergency and obstetrical services, as well as a dedicated Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) nursing unit. Designed at the same time as the new CPMC Van Ness Campus, Mission Bernal maintains many of the same planning concepts that support consistency in operations and quality of care, both critically important to Sutter Health. And while the two new hospitals share the same design principles — attention to detail and the use of natural light and views — Mission Bernal’s architecture is still very much a part of its neighborhood, creating a distinctive street presence and a new community landmark.

The physicians voiced their approval and appreciation for SmithGroup’s work to redesign an even better 120-bed hospital. You guys did an incredible job pulling this together!

The 7-story building has a dramatic exterior stair leading from the street to a two-level plaza and courtyards, maintaining a pedestrian pathway through the site. The multi-story lobby flanking the exterior stair provides a dynamic, easily navigated space for patients and visitors.
