SmithGroup's work started with shoreline design for Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus and led to a campus-wide framework plan. The plan identified new building sites, along with new recreational, open space and outdoor learning environments, and strengthened connections with adjacent neighborhoods and Chicago’s public transportation system.
The campus is also greener and more environmentally responsive. SmithGroup’s innovative stormwater design includes green roofs, underground storage, and permeable paving on campus roads and pedestrian walkways, framed by native landscape plantings. A new central quadrangle provides a popular and iconic gathering area while capturing and filtering significant quantities of stormwater before it enters Lake Michigan. The result is a beautiful campus amenity that reflects Loyola’s commitment to community stewardship.
